What is a Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is an ancient beauty tool, which has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. This beauty tool is designed to be pulled across the skin to increase blood circulation, relieve tension and aid lymphatic drainage. Moreover, it is known to release toxins from the skin. It is also believed to move chi (energy) around the face and body.
The treatment involves using a tool to rub the skin in long strokes, applying enough pressure to create minor bruising. It may help to break down scar tissue and connective tissue, improving movement in the joints.
This beauty tool comes in different therapeutic materials, such as rose quartz, and Jade.
How To

This treatment is better demonstrated with a graphic or video. The graphic above shows the different strokes for a successful at home Gua Sha facial. It is highly recommended to use an oil of your choice to make sure you don’t pull and tear the skin. As someone with sensitive and acne-prone skin, I prefer to use an acne friendly oil, such as The Ordinary’s Rosehip Oil. For normal to dry/combination, I would recommend the oil of your choice, such as Oilixia’s Facial Oils.
The treatment involves gentle long strokes, which massage and manipulate blood flow and energy. This is done by targeting lines of energy and points along the face.
This beauty tool is known to leave your skin red, so don’t worry if you see marks or are left with a red face. Nonetheless, make sure not to tug too hard. Also, don’t forget to wash it before and after every use for hygienic purposes.
Benefits
Gua Sha is a healing remedy and it has a lot of benefits. However, since this is a Beauty and Skincare site and not a medical blog, we will only be discussing skin-related benefits.
Some of those skin-related benefits are:

- It helps with deep lines and sagging skin

- Improves acne and acne scars
- Relieves dark circles and puffiness
- Helps improve pigmentation
- Gives healthy glow (oil helps of course)
- Releases toxins
We’re hardcore Gua Sha lovers, so we can go on and one but we definitely suggest trying them out for yourselves.
Favourite Gua Sha Tool

Oilixia Rose Quartz Gua Sha is our absolute favourite. Their beauty tool offers various different sides, to suit and adapt the needs of the skin. Moreover, their serrated edge is said to help erase lines and wrinkles, especially on the forehead. Oilixia’s is also made of Rose Quartz, which has a lot of healing benefits on its own. In addition, it’s gentle on the skin.
Like most beauty tools, even if you use the Jade Roller, it is best used to try with a facial oil. Oilixia also has small samples for purchase.
It is packaged and made in the United Kingdom, and it includes a lovely 100% cotton canvas pouch for storage.
